The instructor

Who's teaching your child

Sensei Darren Dennis. Teaching Shotokan in Fenland since 1996.

Three venues: March, Wisbech, and Downham Market. Three nights a week. Same instructor every class. DBS-checked, fully insured.

Darren trained under international Shotokan instructors and has been grading students in Fenland for nearly thirty years. He isn't the shouty type. He runs a disciplined class — that's different from a loud one. Children who've struggled in team sports or group environments tend to respond well here.

He also teaches children he's been teaching since they were five. Some of them are now teenagers who've stayed. That's probably the most useful thing to know about the club.

The first visit

What happens when you arrive

Step 01

What to wear

A t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms or leggings. No shoes — karate is barefoot. Long hair tied back. That's everything.

Step 02

When to arrive

Ten minutes before the class. We'll show you where the hall is, where to leave things, and where parents can sit and watch.

Step 03

The class

Your child lines up at the back with any other beginners and follows along. By the end they'll know the first stance, the first punch, and how to bow in and out.

Step 04

While they train

Sit at the side and watch. Stay for the full hour if you like. Most parents do, especially on the first night.

Step 05

At the end

A quick chat with Sensei about how it went. No pressure to sign up there and then. Go home, talk to your child, decide.

Common questions

Honest answers

From four years old. We have students from age four through to teenagers. Younger children train at the same sessions — Sensei adjusts what he asks of them accordingly.
Nothing. T-shirt and tracksuit bottoms or leggings. No shoes — karate is done barefoot. If they join in September, the gi and white belt are included free. Outside September, kit is £25.
Karate suits shy children better than most group activities. There's a clear structure to follow, they're not dependent on a team, and the same instructor runs every class. Most shy kids start at the back. Most don't stay there for long.
Every three to four months with international Shotokan instructors. All grading fees are included in the £35 monthly membership. Belts are earned through demonstrated skill, not automatic progression.
No. Month-to-month membership. Leave whenever you want with no cancellation fee. And if after 30 days of weekly training it's still not right for your child, we'll refund the first month in full.
Not a problem. With three venues and three nights a week, there's flexibility if you need to switch a night. Just let Sensei know.
No. Gradings are earned. Some children move faster than others — that's the point. A belt from Fenland Shotokan means something because not everyone gets one automatically.
